May 26, 2011 (newstodate): The Norwegian low-cost carrier Norwegian has bolstered its plans for long-haul aircraft to widen its operations to intercontinental services.
Norwegian has taken over three options for Boeing 787 Dreamliner aircraft currently held by Icelandair.
Two of the aircraft are slated for delivery during the first half of 2013, and the third aircraft will follow in early 2015.
These three aircraft will complement the lease contract for two 787-8 aircraft announced on November 8, 2010.
In February 2005, Icelandair became the first European carrier to order the Boeing 787 Dreamliner, eventually increasing to a total of seven aircraft but deciding in 2008 not to operate the aircraft that have since been on the shelf of its aircraft leasing arm, Icelease.
Norwegian will announce further details on its long-haul plans at a press conference in Oslo later today.
The carrier plans to open flights from Scandinavia to intercontinental destinations including Bangkok and New York
