May 10, 2011 (newstodate): The Turkish airport construction and management company Tepe Akfen Ventures Airport Holding is now working hard to modernize Macedonia's Skopje Alexander the Great Airport.
After winning the tender in August 2008 for the 20-year contract for concession and operation of Skopje Alexander the Great Airport, Ohrid St. Paul the Apostle Airport, and the construction of the New Cargo Airport in Shtip, TAV finally took over the three airports on March 1, 2010.
At Skopje, TAV is extending the existing 2,450m runway by 500 meter, expanding the apron, building a new 40,000 sq m passenger terminal, and a 5,000 sq m office building.
After completion of the on-going projects, the airport will have the capacity to handle three mio passengers per year, while the air cargo infrastructure will be developed to position Skopje as a transit and cargo hub for southeast Europe.
