May 04, 2011 (newstodate): Almost devoid of traffic during most of 2010,and only slightly regaining its breath in 2010, Lithuania's Vilnius Airport is now seeing a resurgence in operations.
The fresh development is driven not least by the low-cost operators WIZZ Air and Ryanair that are now building up networks to and from Lithuania, while the Latvian carrier, airBaltic has scaled down its offerings considerably in tune with the increasing competition.
WIZZ Air has based one A320 aircraft at Vilnius Airport and is now offering 20 weekly rotations between Vilnius and Cork, London, Doncaster-Sheffield, Eindhoven, Barcelona, Rome, Milan and Stockholm, while Ryanair is launching flights in May between Vilnius and Barcelona, Dublin, London, Milan, Rome and Bremen.
Asa result, airBaltic has withdrawn its aircraft earlier based at Vilnius and now serves the Lithuanian market primarily through flights transferring at its hub at Riga Airport, in Latvia.
