May 23, 2011 (newstodate): With the latest volcano eruption on Iceland, much of Greenland's civil aviation is again coming to a halt.
The carrier's crucial North Atlantic traffic to and from Copenhagen, Denmark, is operated at Kangerlussuaq/Sdr Stromfjord Airport that is in the southern part of the island within the no-fly zone announced by the civil aviation authorities.
The only viable alternative to Kangerlussuaq Airport is Narsarsuaq Airport that is, however, located even more to the south.
The issue of Greenland's future airport infrastructure is a much-debated hot issue in Greenland, and politicians are currently debating the future development that includes a new Trans Atlantic airport at Nuuk, more to the north and closer to the population center.
