May 25, 2011 (newstodate): Riga Airport will again be on-line with direct flights to Kazakhstan this summer.
Starting on June 14, 2011, the Latvian company CargoRix Charters will offer a weekly rotation between Riga and Almaty, Kazakhstan, in cooperation with a Latvian tour operator.
The flights will be performed with Airbus A320 aircraft from the Latvian ACMI provider SmartLynx.
-This will be our first own passenger route, and while this will be served with leased aircraft our aim is to acquire own aircraft at a later stage, says Aigars Dobelnieks, CargoRiX Charters commercial director.
-We have, however, already supported quite a number of passenger flights for other parties to destinations in Turkey and Egypt with leased aircraft.
The new route will operated till September 2011.
Almaty was earlier an on-line destination at Riga Airport as the Latvian carrier airBaltic launched flights on the route from April 17, 2008, with two weekly rotations.
airBaltic, however, stopped the service already one year later, entering instead a code-share agreement with the Russian carrier Rossiya to transfer passengers to Almaty via St Petersburg.
