May 24, 2011 (newstodate): DHL Express is again expanding its services in the Swedish market, opening a fourth gateway at Orebro Airport in 2011.
-We expect the first flight into Orebro Airport by mid-September, extending the existing Boeing 737 freighter flight from Brussels to Copenhagen into Orebro and returning from Orebro to Brussels via Copenhagen, says Ted Soderholm, DHL Express managing director Sweden.
-Routing the freighter destined for the Central Swedish market via Copenhagen Airport also allows us to transfer shipments unto flights from Copenhagen to Leipzig, our main European hub which adds to the flexibility of our services.
-We actually operated a freighter service into Orebro earlier this decade, mainly to service Ericsson's transports of mobile phones, but later pulled out again as this demand decreased. This left the Central Swedish market too open to our competitors, and our decision to return to Orebro is an indication that we will fight to expand our share of this increasing market.
-Another reason behind the re-opening of the route to Orebro is the fact that our largest Swedish gateway at Stockholm Arlanda, served with an Airbus A300F, is close to saturation and would have needed larger aircraft to cope with increasing demands. Taking the pressure off this gateway through the new service into Orebro will benefit both the Stockholm area and the Central Swedish region, says Mr Soderholm.
DHL Express is currently building new facilities at Orebro Airport, and as they become operational the full setup will be in place well ahead of the coming Christmas peak.
In addition to the daily A300F operation at Stockholm Arlanda connecting to Leipzig, DHL Express also operates a daily flight between Leipzig and Gothenburg Landvetter, while the company's base in Southern Sweden, at Limhamn, is served with trucking connections to and from DHL's base at Copenhagen Airport.
