May 26, 2011 (newstodate): Since April 2011, American Airlines is online in Finland, with a daily Boeing 767-300ER rotation between Chicago and Helsinki.
-Even if this is only a seasonal route, the reception in the Finnish airfreight market has been very positive indeed, says Agnete Rohde-Nielsen, managing the Helsinki office of North Air Cargo, the carrier's cargo GSA in Finland.
-So far cargo shipments include electronics, telecom equipment, ships spares and other cargo that fits into the lower deck of AA's Boeing 767 aircraft that loads up to five or eight tonnes, depending on the booking situation.
-Behind the initial success is also the fact that there is always a demand in the Finnish market for Chicago as an air cargo destination, and much cargo is also transferred via Chicago to a range of other US destinations on the carrier's large domestic network.
-Basically, the Finnish airfreight market is heavily dominated by Finnair, and Finnish freight forwarders are known to be very loyal to their national carrier. But Chicago has not been served with direct flights for many years, so this is really a welcome addition to the market, says Ms Rohde-Nielsen.
Among other carriers in the GSAs portfolio are CAL Cargo, Cyprus Airways, FedEx Express, Iberia, Leisure Cargo Group, Qantas Freight, bmi Cargo, while Cargolux is the single largest airline principal at North Air Logistics Finland.
