Apr 01, 2011 (newstodate): The struggle around Finland's Malmi Airport continues, as the city council has extended the building moratorium for the 5th time.
The airport with two runways at 1,340 and 1,000 m, respectively, is located on land rented by the Finnish state from Malmi City that wants to take back the area for development of residential and industrial purposes.
If the airport is forced to close down, the Malmi City authorities will have to select an alternative location which, however, is also not ease due to environmentalist pressures.
Until the opening of the Helsinki Vantaa Airport in 1952, Malmi Airport was Finland's main international airport.
