Apr 12, 2011 (newstodate): SAS has announced new contracts with GECAS for lease of new Boeing 737 aircraft.
So far, the SAS Group has signed up with GECAS for delivery of five new 737-800NG aircraft, in addition to an MoU for delivery of a further 12 737-700NG aircraft.
The new aircraft will allow SAS to phase out its remaining nine MD-80 and 11 737 Classics at its bases at Stockholm and Oslo, where it also operates 67 737NG aircraft.
SAS will also take its 17 MD-80 aircraft at Copenhagen out of service, replacing them with new Airbus A320 Family aircraft, 12 of which are already in service with SAS Denmark at Copenhagen Airport.
The new A320 aircraft will be delivered from 2012 to 2016.
It remains to be seen if the new A320 aircraft will be A320neo, and the number of A320 orders has also not yet been released.
