Apr 01, 2011 (newstodate): The boom in Norway's export of fresh salmon to the US market has receded after a few hectic years of growth.
The strong growth in the US market especially during 2008 and 2009 was caused by the shortfall of salmon exports to the USA from Chile that was hurt by a disease reducing the country's production capacity to some 35 percent of the normal volume.
-This trend has turned. Chile's production is slowly rising again, with about 100,000 tonnes in 2010, estimated to grow to 200,000 tonnes in 2011 and to 300,000 in 2012, after which the country will be back to its former levels around 400,000 tonnes of salmon per year, says an industry source.
-While slowly regaining its former production capacity, Chile is also benefiting from the easier logistics concerning the US market.
-Besides, the current exchange rates between US dollars and Norwegian Kroner has also reduced the competitive power of the Norwegian salmon export to the US market, so we may not see a return of the recent years' growth potentials here, he says.
As late as in 2009, Norway's export of fresh salmon to the US market grew by about 40 percent, y-o-y, generating some 3-4,000 tonnes of salmon by air per month.
