Apr 19, 2011 (newstodate): The Russian carrier UTAir Cargo has stated flights with supplies for the floating Camp Barneo, near the North Pole.
A logistics chain has been established at Longyearbyen on Spitsbergen, in Norway's Svalbard Archipelago, and the carrier is operating an AN-74 freighter on the mission.
The logistics mission started late March and will last about one month, operated with flight crews specifically trained for runway operations on ice surfaces.
Built on floating ice, the camp including its runway is constructed from scratch every year, and by the end of each season, all equipment is removed from the ice.
The AN-74 is a special arctic support version of the AN-72, with a 5-member crew, increased fuel capacity, larger radar in bulged nose radome, improved navigation equipment, and enhanced de-icing equipment as well as a wheel-skis landing gear.
