Following a tender in 2008, the Canadian company Intelcan Technosystems Inc. emerged as the majority shareholder of airport, and rights to manage the Brasov-Ghimbav International Airport.
But the entire concept has been shrouded in political vicissitudes, delaying the start of the project construction.
Now a local company is making the earthworks and perimeter fence, and authorities are expected to launch the official tender for the construction works of the airport by either April or May, 2011, sources say.
The new airport is designed to have a 2,800 m runway and a terminal accommodating one mio passengers in the initial stage.
In the first phase, the construction period will be 24-30 months, and original plans were to start construction by mid-April 2009 already.
