Apr 19, 2011 (newstodate): Preparations for opening of Stepanakert Airport, in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region, under de-facto Armenian control since the war with Azerbaijan in the 90ies, are now in the near completion.
The first flight will be by mid-May destined for Yerevan, Armenia, and with the Nagorno-Karabagh top brass on board despite threats by Azerbaijan that considers this part of its territory to shoot it down.
A new carrier, Artsakh Air has been set up with three Canadair CRJ-200 aircraft to provide flights from the territory.
Reconstruction of the 2,178m runway is nearly finished, airport buildings are ready, airnav equipment has been installed, and meteorological systems will be implemented in the coming weeks.
Artsakh Air will offer flights to and from Yerevan every second day, but plans are later to build up the fleet to open also international routes.
