Apr 01, 2011 (newstodate): Cargo volumes continue to rise at Denmark's Billund Airport.
A total of 5.687 tonnes of cargo was handled in March 2011, an increase by 14.8 percent, y-o-y, following after January's growth by 20.6 and February's growth by 12.7 percent, y-o-y.
The increase in volumes through March was again prompted by exports that were up 22.2 percent to 2.716 tonnes, while imports are still trailing behind with only 8.7 percent growth, compared to last year.
Summing up Q1/2011, the airport has thus handled 15,005 tonnes of cargo, up 15.9 percent, y-o-y.
In 2009, volumes during Q1 were 10,423 tonnes, down 24.2 percent, while volumes in Q1 2008 were 13,754, down 1.4 percent.
With this year's strong Q1 performance, Billund Airport may be heading towards a fresh record, beating last year's total of 61,568 tonnes - an increase by 35.4 percent, y-o-y.
Preparing for continued cargo growth, the airport has recently announced its decision to expand the cargo center to boost cargo handling capacity to 100,000 tonnes per year.
