Apr 04, 2011 (newstodate): Banja Luka Airport, in Republika Srpska, is facing the grim prospects of being closed down.
The airport is in dire financial troubles and has reportedly not paid salaries to its employees, and is now facing the threat of losing its operational license.
Only Slovenia's Adria Airways and Bosnia's BH Airlines are currently operating at Banja Luka, with flights to Ljubljana and Zurich, respectively.
Banja Luka International Airport, with a 2,500m runway, was opened for civilian air traffic on November 18, 1997, but never saw much air traffic.
In 2010, the government of the Republic of Srpska announced plans for upgrading of Banja Luka International Airport and a further boost to the republic's aviation, deciding to set up a new state-owned carrier Sky Srpska with two jet aircraft to be based at Banja Luka International Airport. But the plans never materialized due to the strained economic situation after the global crisis.
