Mar 15, 2011 (newstodate): Following on the latest board meeting on March 8, 2011, West Air has decided on the out-sourcing of its flight ops department.
-Luxembourg will be the future home base for our flight operations, and the last flight by West Air Sweden will be on July 31, 2011, says Russell Ladkin, West Atlantic Sales & Operations Director.
-The same date has also been set as the deadline for our flight crews to decide on our offer for employment with West Air Luxembourg.
-The decision was, after all, relatively easy to reach. The cost structure in Scandinavia is absolutely detrimental to operating an airline efficiently in today's highly competitive market. But let me stress that other options were considered as alternatives to Luxembourg, including Bulgaria. Eventually we did not opt for the cheapest, but the best solution to secure our existing contracts as well as our ability to bid in future tenders and projects, says Mr Ladkin.
After losing the Norwegian mail flights tender it became obvious for West Air Sweden that it has been operating in a high-cost environment making it uncompetitive due to high wages, high social costs, and high costs for maintaining AOCs in Scandinavia, driving the need for out-sourcing its flight operations department outside Scandinavia.
