Mar 14, 2011 (newstodate): Latvia's Riga Airport needs to optimize its existing infrastructure in order to cope with rising volumes of operations.
In 2010 the airport saw the number of aircraft served up by 13 percent, y-o-y, to 68,145 while passenger volumes increased by 15 percent to 4,663,692.
This puts great stress on both terminal facilities and runway capacity.
The airport has one 3,200m runway that is now to be renovated and strengthened before its certification in 2013
Also new runway lighting systems will be implemented according to ICAO standards, additional taxiways allowing for faster exit will be built, and the apron will be reconstructed.
All these measures will be completed during 2012-13, financially supported by the EU Cohesion Fund.
With the runway projects completed, the airport's capacity will increase from the current handling of 49 to 52 aircraft per hour.
