Mar 29, 2011 (newstodate): Lithuania's Vilnius Airport is looking forward to a busy summer season after the start of the new airline schedules.
New in the airport will be two low-cost carriers, WIZZ Air introducing flights to London, Cork, Doncaster, Eindhoven, Milan, Rome, Barcelona and Stockholm from April 17, 2011, and Ryanair that will offer flights from Vilnius to Bremen, Dublin, Girona, London (Stansted), Milan and Rome starting May 2, 2011.
During the summer season, 15 airlines will be operating at the airport, and the total seat offer will bring the airport back to 2008-levels, healing the deep wounds from the general recession in 2009 and, not least, the demise of the former Lithuanian flag carrier, flyLAL that went out of business from the start of that year.
Counting seats, the Latvian carrier airBaltic will be the leading airline this summer, followed closely by Ryanair and WIZZ Air.
The airport expects to generate some 1.8 mio passengers in 2011, compared to 1.4 mio passengers in 2009.
