Mar 17, 2011 (newstodate): The long-overdue launch of commercial services with the new Russian regional jet, the Superjet 100 is still in the balance.
The first aircraft is to be delivered to Armenian carrier Armavia, but sources claim that the carrier is in financial troubles and may not be able to receive the aircraft.
The second airline to take delivery of the Superjet 100 is Russia's Aeroflot that has, however, cast doubts over the aircraft's operational capabilities that may be below the specifications, and has required the manufacturer, Sukhoi, to work on alleviating the snags before it will accept the aircraft in its fleet.
The Superjet 100 has landed a total of 194 firm orders, with Aeroflot to take 30 aircraft, and Armavia to receive two aircraft.
According to the initial plans, deliveries should have started from 2008 already, but the program has met with a number of delays, including problems with the engine construction.
