Mar 30, 2011 (newstodate): The Board of Denmark's Billund Airport has given its green light for a major expansion of the airport's cargo handling facilities.
In the plans now confirmed is an expansion by 2,215 sq.m. of the existing cargo facilities, adding a new airfreight pallet loading system and five loading ramps allowing for faster flow in the cargo handling processes.
With the planned expansion to a total of 13,000 sq.m. the cargo center's annual handling capacity will exceed 100,000 tonnes, allowing for further growth in the airport's volumes that set a new record in 2010 with 62,000 tonnes.
The positive trend in 2010 when volumes grew by 30.8 percent, y-o-y, has continued into this year, with a 12.7 percent increase during January-February, 2011.
The airport now handles 1,600 scheduled freighter operations per year, including daily DHL, TNT and UPS flights, cargo charter operations as well as air cargo on passenger aircraft.
Besides, Cargo Center Billund handles some 7,000 RFS trucks annually.
