Mar 17, 2011 (newstodate): Azerbaijan has warned that aircraft operating to and from Stepanakert Airport will be sure to meet a hostile welcome.
Stepanakert Airport, in the disputed Nagorno-Karabagh region under de-facto Armenian control since the war with Azerbaijan in the 90ies, has been inoperative for 20 years, but plans are to reopen it from May 9, 2011, with flights from Yerevan, Armenia.
The flights will be provided by Artsakh Air set up by the government of Nagorno-Karabagh in 2010, and planned to operate a fleet of three CRJ-200 aircraft.
Azerbaijan retains its claim on the territory and has applied to ICAO to deny Nagorno-Karabagh rights to open the airport, considering the airspace a military zone.
