Mar 08, 2011 (newstodate): The Swedish airline Viking Airlines is now another chapter in the history book on Swedish aviation failures.
After suspending operations in October 2010 and filing for protection in late November, the carrier still planned to re-launch business by March 2011 after a reconstruction.
Instead, the carrier has had its AOC revoked and has now entered into bankruptcy due to excessive debts and unsolved obligations.
Viking Airlines was the first European airline to start operations from Europe into Iraq, flying from Stockholm to Erbil since December, 2005, and adding weekly flights to Erbil from Copenhagen from November 2006.
Viking airlines was hit severely by the demise of the UK tour operator KISS Flights that was to be a major customer of the carrier, and efforts to find new customers and to raise new capital for the airline ended without results.
Suspending operations from October 15, 2010, Viking Airlines had to return its four leased Boeing 737-800 aircraft to the lessor, and is now entirely out of business.
