Feb 09, 2011 (newstodate): Finnair reports no less than 41.1 percent increase in cargo volumes carried in January 2011.
A total of 11,139 tonnes of cargo was handled by the carrier in January, but the unprecedented growth may partly be due to a pick-up in demand, particularly in traffic between Europe and Asia, and the impact of the Finnair Cargo freighter traffic launched in May 2010.
Thus, volumes in the Asian traffic grew by 10 percent to 5,980 tonnes, while the freighter traffic contributed 2,447 tonnes.
North Atlantic cargo was up 31.5 percent, to 717 tonnes, still marking the impact of the freighter service between Helsinki and New York launched November 19, 2010.
European cargo, 1,755 tonnes, was up 16.5 percent, y-o-y, in January, but volumes were down in both the domestic and the leisure segments.
While the load factor improved by 12.9 percentage-points on the North Atlantic service, it dropped 4.8 percentage-points on the Asian traffic, to 83.6 and 71.5, respectively.
