Feb 15, 2011 (newstodate): Passenger volumes are expected to continue to grow at Estonia's Tallinn Airport, paving the road for introduction of competition in the ground handling business.
The airport sticks to EU regulations that require ground handling to be opened up for competitors once the passenger volumes reach two million per year.
The Latvian company North Hub Services originally intended to open up an Estonian subsidiary by June 1, 2010, but have been limited to serve airBaltic aircraft only as this carrier introduced self-handling.
In 2010 passenger volumes at Tallinn Airport were 1.4 mio, now estimated to rise to 1.8 in 2011, equal to the level of 2008, and growing further to 2.4 mio in 2015.
-Once the two mio mark is reached, we will be ready to move in. In the meantime we are gaining experience through providing self-handling for airBaltic's operations, and this experience may prove a further asset once we move in in full force, Janis Balkens, North Hub Services CEO told newstodate on December 20, 2010.
