Feb 28, 2011 (newstodate): The changed marked conditions in Lithuania with more low-cost flights at Vilnius Airport are forcing carriers to re-think strategies.
As an immediate reflection of this, the Latvian carrier airBaltic has decided to suspend its services from Vilnius to Dublin, London, Rome and Paris from this summer.
Both Ryanair and WIZZ-Air have announced opening of flights to these, and other, destinations, bringing stiff competition on rates to the market.
-The world is big enough, and we chose rather to walk away from the crowd, to avoid the other two airlines flying wing-to-wing with each other, says Tadas Vizgirda, airBaltic Lithuania General Manager.
-The new Vilnius airport discount scheme appears to have backfired, resulting in overcapacity on just a handful of routes rather than broadening the choice of routes, as intended by the scheme, says Mr Vizgirda.
