Feb 28, 2011 (newstodate): Icelandair seems to be in good shape in the market, while the company's cargo arm, Icelandair Cargo seems to be trailing behind.
According to a source in the industry, Icelandair is booming and showing very good results.
The carrier is growing its capacity by about 17 percent this year, adding two more aircraft and a few new destinations, including Washington and Billund.
-Their booking situation indicates that the capacity increase is selling, says the source.
On the other hand, Icelandair Cargo seems stuck in the slow lane.
-The imports to Iceland are still weak while exports are strong. Icelandair Cargo is today focusing on traffic to and from Iceland only, leaving few alternative opportunities to go for, says the source.
Before the latest financial crises set in Icelandair Cargo was pursuing a strategy of international expansion based on the limited scope of its home market and the need to find a broader market base for growth.
