Feb 04, 2011 (newstodate): After holding their cards tight to the body, the parties behind a new freighter service from Norway to Hong Kong have now confirmed what was a rumor till now.
-Operations between Oslo Gardermoen Airport and Hong Kong will start from February 18, 2011, says Arild Ostbraathen, Schenker Norway general manager.
The route will be operated each Friday by British Airways World Cargo with a Boeing 747-400 freighter.
-The new route is driven by exports of Norwegian salmon to the Far East, but sales will also be open for exports of other types of cargo, says Mr Ostbraathen.
BAWC has earlier operated a freighter service from Oslo Gardermoen to support the Norwegian salmon exports - but the operation was suspended after a rather brief period of time.
Other attempts were made by Polar Air and, lately, Sundt Atlanta Skybridge, while Aeroflot operated a series of IL-76 charter flights until the aircraft was banned from the airport.
Lufthansa Cargo/Japan Airlines Cargo also operated a joint freighter service from Oslo Gardermoen for a period.
The only exception to the come-and-go approach to freighter services from Oslo to Asian destinations is Korean Air Cargo that has operated freighter services on the route from Oslo Gardermoen to Incheon, South Korea, since 2004, now offering three weekly rotations.
