Dec 30, 2011 (newstodate): After a strong performance in 2011, Lithuania's Vilnius Airport is upbeat about prospects for sustained growth in 2012.
Vilnius Airport will end this year with a 22 percent y-o-y increase in 2011 - above the 17 percent average growth in all of Lithuania's airport, and also above the 15 percent over-all growth at Baltic airports including Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania. And certainly beating the EU-average at 4.5 percent growth in passenger volumes in 2011.
Vilnius Airport now estimates next year's growth to land around 25 percent,y-o-y, at least seven new direct routes will be launched, and profitable activities are anticipated for 20122014.
The airport attributes the strong performance to the massive low-cost policies pursued and the new pricing system introduced to lure operators, and airport charges have been cut to one-third of the levels in 2005.
At the end of 2011, 17 airlines operated regular flights from Vilnius Airport, and regular flights are available on 23 routes to 26 airports.
Vilnius airport expects to open at least seven new routes in 2012: daily flights to Berlin and three-times-a-week flights to Paris and Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden from March 2012.
By the end of March 2012, daily flights will establish a direct communication channel between Vilnius Airport and the third airport in Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport, and twice-weekly flights to Bergen, Oslo and Liverpool will be launched in May 2012.
The airport also expects a rising volume of charter operations in 2012.
