Dec 22, 2011 (newstodate): The battle for Nordic market shares is now sharpening between Scandinavia's SAS and Finland's Finnair.
As a latest move, SAS has announced its decision to strengthen its services between destinations in Finland and the carrier's hub at Copenhagen Airport.
From 2012, the SAS Group's carrier Blue1 will launch flights on a spree of new routes between Copenhagen and Finnish destinations Kittila, Kuopio, Oulu, Vaasa, Lappeenranta and Turku in addition to Helsinki and Tampere that are already served.
Blue1 will also open flights on new routes to SAS' other Scandinavian hub, Stockholm, from Pori, Kokkola and Oulu in addition to Helsinki, Tampere, Vaasa and Turku that are also already served.
With these new routes, SAS strives to direct air travel between Finland and Europe as well as intercontinental destinations into the SAS route network.
In 2011, Finnair has teamed up with the UK carrier Flybe to establish Flybe Nordic that is now setting up flights between Helsinki and Swedish destinations Norrkoping, Skelleftea, Mariehamn, and Umeaa.
Flybe Nordic will also operate flights on routes between Helsinki and Trondheim, in Norway, and Gdansk, in Poland.
Estonia will become another major destination for Flybe Nordic that will operate flights on routes between Vaasa, Oulu, Turku and Tampere in Finland, as well as to Stockholm Bromma Airport, in Sweden.
At a later stage, plans also include new flights between Helsinki and Lithuania and Latvia.
With the Flybe Nordic-construction, Finnair will similarly fight to direct Nordic and Baltic passengers into its primarily Asian route network.
