Dec 14, 2011 (newstodate): Plans for construction of a new dedicated air cargo airport in Szombathely, Hungary, close to the Austrian border, are in the balance.
The project would be financed by a Chinese partner, and the final discussions between the Chinese Embassy and the Hungarian government is due before the end of this year.
But according to industry sources, the project seems to have run into a stalemate and its prospects are not overly bright.
Behind the project is the Hungarian company Sia-Port Ltd. in cooperation with Chinese partners.
Sia-Port holds a 75-year lease on the land and plans for construction of a 4,000m runway.
In the plans are facilities to handling of up to 170,000 tonnes of air cargo, compared to the country's Budapest Ferihegy International Airport's current volumes around 60,000 of cargo per year.
