Dec 15, 2011 (newstodate): Defying record-high losses and acute need for a fresh capital injection, the Ukrainean-owned Danish carrier Cimber Sterling has high ambitions to reposition itself as a leading regional carrier in the Nordic region.
The new strategy builds on a restructuring of the business and a closer cooperation with its Group sister airline, the Swedish carrier Skyways.
As a consequence of the shift in strategy, Cimber Sterling will phase out, over the next few years, its existing fleet of Boeing six 737-700, three ATR-42, six ATR-72 and 10 CRJ-200 aircraft, in addition to Skyways' fleet of 10 Fokker 50 and two Embraer 145, replacing it with a fleet comprising of only two aircraft types, one turboprop and one jet aircraft type.
Both Cimber Sterling and Skyways were acquired in 2011 by the Cyprus-based asset management company Manswell Enterprises Limited., owned by the Ukrainean strongman Igor Kolomoysky, one the leaders of the so-called Dnipropetrovsk Group
