Dec 09, 2011 (newstodate): Lufthansa Cargo is quite satisfied with the freighter operations from Lithuania's Kaunas Airport to Frankfurt and beyond.
The service was launched in August 2011 on a weekly basis, using the incoming Jade Cargo Boeing 747-400F aircraft from China.
-We are seeing 20-25 tonnes of loads on each departure, and apart from a few cancellations the regularity has been good, says Alexander Kohnen, Lufthansa Cargo Director for the Nordic and Baltic countries.
-In total we have lifted some 200 tonnes our of Kaunas, almost exclusively export freight from the Baltic markets where we have certainly strenghtened our presence through this new dedicated service. By the direct freighter service we have reduced lead-times into our gateway at Frankfurt very significantly, cutting about two days off the total transportation time.
-Volumes from Finland have been rather insignificant, however, as the benefits in total transportation times are very limited, compared to the existing trucking services into Frankfurt. In either case a ferry service will be involved, and that reduces the difference in lead-time.
-So, we are happy with the Kaunas freighter that has performed even above expectations, and it will certainly be continued in 2012 as well, says Mr Kohnen.
