Nov 10, 2011 (newstodate): Russia's Vladivostok Airport is to become Russia's first Open Skies airport.
The airport has been granted a special status by the country's ministry of transport, allowing it to accept any carrier from any country to pick up and drop off passengers and cargo without bilateral agreements.
Until now, and still valid for all other Russian airports, foreign carriers are only allowed to operated within strict limitations as set down by bilateral agreement between Russia and each country. Fueling stops have, however, been exempt from these requirements.
In 2008, the Russian state passed its 52.16 percent ownership stake to Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport that is now controlling Vladivostok Airport and securing its modernisation process.
The Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation summit will be hosted in Vladivostok in September 2012.
