Nov 24, 2011 (newstodate): Russia is taking yet another step towards enforcing stricter air safety measures from the start of 2012.
Effective from January 1, 2012, all aircraft on Russian registration must be equipped with EGPWS systems to prevent a significant air safety issue, controlled flight into terrain.
The new regulation was announced in 2009, leaving time for airlines to prepare for its implementation, but sources say some 200 out of a total of 2,500 aircraft are still not upgraded with the required systems, including smaller regional airlines that will depend on state subsidies to acquire the equipment.
