Nov 28, 2011 (newstodate): With an extensive construction program, Poland's Warsaw Chopin Airport is flexing its muscles to take on a leading role as a East European hub.
-Several significant development projects have recently been completed at Chopin Airport, including the opening of two new piers increasing terminal space by more than 18,000 sq.m. With 45 passenger gates and 23 passenger bridges, as compared to 28 bridges and 16 gates before the extension, we are now one of Central and East Europe's leading airports, says Przemyslaw Przybylski, Warsaw Chopin Airport communications manager.
-In August 2011, we completed a comprehensive repair of Runway 1. With the increased load-bearing capacity, we can now handle the largest passenger aircraft including Boeing 747-8 and Airbus A380 on a regular basis. Also, resurfacing work at one of the parking aprons and taxiways is coming to a close, scheduled to be finished by the end of the year.
-After the European football championships next summer, we will close the old part of Terminal A, the former Terminal 1, for two years, during which time the building will be thoroughly modernized and integrated with the new part opened in 2008.
-In 2013 we also plan to repair runway 3 along with constructing new rapid exit taxiways, increasing the airport's throughput from 15 to approximately 20 million passengers annually.
-Additionally, we have started the development of centralized fuel infrastructure, which is expected to encourage competition among fuel suppliers at Chopin Airport - currently there is only one provider, says Mr Przybylski.
Construction has also started of a new five-star hotel, scheduled for opening by the middle of 2013, as well as an economy class hotel.
