Nov 07, 2011 (newstodate): The government of Montenegro is mulling plans for construction of a new airport to serve Tivat.
The existing Tivat Airport is close to saturation and plans are to build a new airport to replace it in phases, starting from 2017 with completion of the first stage of a new airport project.
EBRD financial support has been secure, and the Montenegrine state will also draw financing from a public-private ownership construction.
Earlier, the state has also aired vision of an outright privatization of the airport, and Turkish companies have been in negotiations with Montenegro on this issue.
The existing Tivat Airport is rated 4D by ICAO as it offers very demanding operational conditions due to high mountains.
Tivat Airport has 2,500m runway and scheduled services by several carriers to destinations in Russia and Germany.
