Nov 08, 2011 (newstodate): The process towards a decision on the future of Lithuania's three airport may take a significant step forward this week.
The Lithuanian government has referred its proposal on the issue to the parliament and if passed, the next step will be to transform the ownership of the three airport of Vilnius, Kaunas and Palanga from state ownership to public limited companies, owned by the state in the first place but leaving room for later changes to include private owners as well.
The debate on the ownership structure started in 2009 with a comprehensive report on the future airport infrastructure of Lithuania worked out by several consultants including the Danish consulting and engineering company COWI and the Lithuanian EKT.
The ministry then worked out several scenarios for political decision-making, but political changes delayed the process significantly.
Initially, the ministry expected the process towards a privatization of the country's airport to be completed already by summer 2010.
