Nov 08, 2011 (newstodate): Competition will be heating up in Iceland's air transport business from next summer.
So far, no less than 16 airlines have reportedly announced, or are expected to announce, flight schedules that include Icelandic destinations on their route maps, giving the country's national carrier Icelandair a rough ride.
Besides Icelandair, Iceland Express will surely feel the pressure from the emergence of a second Icelandic low-cost carrier, WOW Air currently being set up.
Also another Icelandic aviation company, Primera Air now based in Copenhagen will launch flights to Iceland from summer, and sources claim that easyJet is also mulling plans for entering the Icelandic market.
Another carrier expected to return summer flights to Iceland is Lufthansa that operated two weekly flights between Keflavik and Dusseldorf and Hamburg with CRJ900 and Boeing 737, respectively, and Austrian Airlines also operated a weekly flight to Vienna with Boeing 737 aircraft.
