Nov 22, 2011 (newstodate): The Icelandic LCC Iceland Express has terminated its contract with Astraeus on flight operations.
As an interim solution, the company will instead offer flights on aircraft from the Czech company Holidays Czech Airlines, a subsidiary of CSA Airlines.
The contract with CSA took effect from November 21, 2011, already, the company says in a release.
The decision follows on a series of problems with Astraeus leading to cancellations and delays in flight operations causing massive negative response in the market.
Astraeus that shares ownership with Iceland Express is reportedly now folding its wings and exiting from business.
At the same time, Iceland Express is undergoing a thorough restructuring process lead by the management headed by Skarphedinn Berg Steinarsson, a member of the IE board, as temporary CEO since early October 2011, pending the decision on a new CEO to lead the company.
Iceland Express was provided with Boeing 757 capacity by Astraeus, while The new Czech provider operates only Boeing 737-500 and Airbus A320 Family aircraft.
Iceland Express has earlier announced that it plans to build up an own fleet of aircraft, pending the landing of an own AOC and licenses from the Icelandic FAA.
Plans by the airline is to have the new aircraft on own registry by summer 2012, with the focus on a fleet comprising only two types of aircraft, Boeing 757 and Boeing 737-700.
