Nov 01, 2011 (newstodate): Today marks the first day in office for Martin Gauss, new CEO at Latvia's airBaltic.
With the new helmetsman the carrier will now work out and get confirmation of a new strategy for the carrier after a troubled period with financial problems and strained relations between the carrier's top management and the political environment.
First to come is a flight schedule and destinations network for the current winter season, now operated as an extention of the preceding summer schedule, and among the tough issues next to be tackled will be decision on the carrier's future fleet composition and size reflecting the goals of the coming new strategy.
As for future aircraft fleet, Mr Gauss' assignment with airBaltic may raise hopes at Sukhoi for a better chance for its Superjet, competing with Airbus A320 Family and Boeing 737NG aircraft, as he was among the decision-makers when his former company, Malev opted for acquisition of this aircraft type.
