Nov 29, 2011 (newstodate): As part of its efforts to rein in costs and optimize its operations, Finnair will start reducing its fleet of narrow-body aircraft from 2012.
The company will thus hand back four Airbus A320 aircraft as their lease period expires by autumn 2012, compensating for the reduced capacity by optimizing the airline's flight schedules and network.
Over-all, the carrier is evaluating the optimum size of its fleet in European air traffic, and has also started analyzing different alternatives to improve the cost-efficiency of its maintenance service.
In the Finnair fleet serving the European network now are 11 Airbus A319, 12 Airbus A320, and six Airbus A321 aircraft, and so far plans are to take delivery of a further five A321 from 2013.
Finnair also operates eight Airbus A330-300 and seven Airbus A340-300 on its intercontinental route network, which will later be served by a fleet of 11 Airbus A350-900 aircraft planned for delivery from 2014, gradually poised to replace the Airbus A330/340 fleet.
In the fleet are also 17 Embraer aircraft for short-haul services as well as four Boeing 757-200 aircraft used in charter operations.
