Nov 08, 2011 (newstodate): Like many other carriers, Finnair is struggling with its airfreight performance.
In October 2011, the carrier's available tonne-kilometers increased by 20.3 percent, y-o-y, but its revenue tone-kilometers were up by only 7.4 percent, leaving a gap in the cargo load factor that consequently dropped by 14.9 percent, y-o-y, on the Asian lanes, and by another 20.4 percent on the trans-Atlantic lanes.
Given the additional fact that ex-Asia cargo rates are down also due to over-capacity in most markets and that fuel prices continue to soar, the cargo yields are down as well, although this is not announced by the company.
-The profitability of Finnair cargo traffic is declining, due to decreases in both prices and demand, the carrier said in its latest financial announcement.
-The statement quoted is a reflection of the overall trend and the development in the industry. I think most airlines are in a very similar situation. There is nothing special we would add to it as such, adds Antero Lahtinen, Finnair Cargo Managing Director.
