Nov 25, 2011 (newstodate): Does Moscow Vnukovo Airport has a future as a cargo transfer hub?
The issue has been discussed at a recent conference in Moscow in conjunction with the Transport Russia Exhibition 2011.
At the conference, the airport's managing director presented a vision of turning Vnukovo Airport into a new air cargo hub in cooperation with AirBridgeCargo and Swiss logistics and forwarding group Panalpina.
A project group has now been set in motion, with Amsterdam Schiphol Airport to serve as external consultant.
Of Moscow's three main airports Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo and Vnukovo, the latter is by far the smallest in volumes.
Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport is leading in international cargo while Moscow Domodedovo Airport is primarily strong in domestic cargo, which is also the case for Moscow Vnukovo Airport.
Over-all, Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport represents 45-50 percent, Moscow Domodedovo Airport accounts for 40-45 percent of the combined volumes of the Moscow airports, and the remaining about 10 percent is generated by Moscow Vnukovo Airport.
In September 2009, Moscow Vnukovo Airport commissioned its new cargo cargo complex, one of Russia's largest cargo terminals and designed with a capacity of handling up to 150,000 tonnes of cargo annually.
In 2010, the airport handled a total of 34,900 tonnes of cargo, an increase by no less than 40 percent, y-o-y.
Also in 2010, Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport handled about 280,000 tonnes of cargo.
And Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport is also planning for a new large cargo complex, to be come the largest in Eastern Europe with the capacity of handling more than one mio tonnes annually.
Partners are AirBridgeCargo, with Lufthansa Consulting serving as consultant.
