Nov 04, 2011 (newstodate): The Estonian government has now approved Estonian Air's new business strategy focusing on developing air connections to and from Estonia.
In support of the new strategy, the state will invest 30 million Euro in the airline to renew its fleet, expand the network, and increase flight frequencies.
During 2012-2013, Estonian Air will focus on strengthening the company's economical situation and restructuring, aiming at consolidating the carrier's position in Scandinavia and the Baltics to achieve sustainable growth and improved economical results.
In 2012, several new destinations among Europe' most important cities as well as regional centers in Scandinavia will be opened in an effort to develop Tallinn Airport into a transfer point for passenger traffic.
Starting from 2014, Estonian Air will start looking beyond the region to consider potentials for long-haul flights at Tallinn Airport in cooperation with international partner airlines.
To implement the new strategy, Estonian Air now plans to activate its options for five more Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft to replace the two Boeing 737-300 and two Boeing 737-500 aircraft.
The first four new aircraft will be delivered to Estonian Air already in 2012.
Three of the five new aircraft will replace the existing Boeing fleet, while the next two will enable the company to grow.
Estonian Air currently operates a fleet of two CRJ900 aircraft, and a third aircraft is due for delivery in December 2011.
The carrier's CEO, Tero Taskila has earlier said he envisages Estonian Air to end up with a fleet of 15 aircraft by 2015.
