Nov 09, 2011 (newstodate): To facilitate its reorientation according to the newly approved strategy, Estonian Air is laying down a number of routes in its winter schedule 2011/12.
The carrier has thus stopped operations on routes from Tallinn to Barcelona, Berlin, Milan and Minsk, and from Vilnius, in Lithuania, to Amsterdam, Berlin, Milan and Stockholm.
Instead, the carrier will open "several new destinations in Europe's most important cities as well as regional centers in Scandinavia" in 2012, as contained by the strategy.
The move to cut services to several destinations will ease the pressure on aircraft capacity in the transitional period of phasing in more Bombardier CRTJ900 aircraft to replace the fleet of Boeing 737 and SAAB 340 aircraft.
To implement the new strategy, Estonian Air is ordering five more Bombardier CRJ900 aircraft to replace the two Boeing 737-300 and two Boeing 737-500 aircraft.
The first four new aircraft will be delivered to Estonian Air already in 2012.
Three of the five new aircraft will replace the existing Boeing fleet, while the next two will enable the company to grow.
Estonian Air currently operates a fleet of two CRJ900 aircraft, and a third aircraft is due for delivery in December 2011.
The carrier's CEO, Tero Taskila has earlier said he envisages Estonian Air to end up with a fleet of 15 aircraft by 2015.
