Nov 29, 2011 (newstodate): Greenland's national carrier Air Greenland will see increasing competition in summer 2012 from the Icelandic carrier Air Iceland.
Air Iceland, a subsidiary of Icelandair, will operate between Reykjavik in Iceland and destinations in Greenland including Ilulissat, increasing from five to six weekly rotations, Kulusuk Island, increasing from 11 to 13 weekly rotations, Narsarsuaq and Nuuk, both increasing from four to five weekly rotations.
Passengers to and from Greenland can then transfer to Icelandair's flights to the USA, Denmark and other countries, competing with Air Greenland on important routes.
In 2011, Air Iceland won a contract in Greenland for official air travel by Greenland's home rule government staff between Greenland and Denmark.
Under the contract, Air Iceland offers flexible and discounted rates for flights between Nuuk and Copenhagen via Keflavik using Air Iceland and Icelandair.
