Oct 06, 2011 (newstodate): The Latvian carrier airBaltic has been flying in heavy turbulence this year - but its airfreight business seems to have been little impacted.
-As far as our cargo goes, we are very similar to last years levels. As cargo is a short-term advance booking product I can say I did not see any effect despite the media hype around airBaltic's situation, says Toms Andersons, airBaltic head of cargo.
-We rather had high passenger season challenges in balancing high passenger loads with space remaining for cargo. The average passenger load on the flights was higher, and consequently the issue of cargo capacity was more of a challenge.
-Of course, global economics, political-economical issues in some markets and competition are always influencing factors. In some places you loose, and in other you gain.
-As for the coming winter season, we will have to see how the reduction of fleet by 10 Fokker 50 will influence our volumes. These aircraft were never great cargo carriers, however, so I therefore expect only a minor reduction in volumes compared to last year due to this, says Mr Andersons.
In 2010, the carrier carried a total of 9,020 tonnes of cargo and mail, an increase by 13 percent, y-o-y.
