Oct 13, 2011 (newstodate): The association of two airports in the Moscow region, Sheremetyevo and Vnukovo, taking effect from summer 2012, may have significant influence on the localization of many airlines, including international carriers operating into Moscow.
According to the agreement between the two airports, Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport will be dedicated to Aeroflot and its SkyTeam airline alliance members to facilitate the future growth of this traffic, while airlines currently handled at the airport will be redirected to Moscow Vnukovo Airport.
In addition to Aeroflot, Sheremetyevo's SkyTeam members are Air France, Alitalia, China Airlines, China Southern, China Eastern, CSA, Delta, Finnair, KLM and Korean Air Lines.
As a consequence, among others Star Alliance members currently handled at Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport will have to move either to Moscow Vnukovo or, alternatively, to Moscow Domodedovo Airport.
This will directly affect Star Alliance members Adria Airways, Air China, Lot and SAS.
No Star Alliance member airlines are currently handled at Moscow Vnukovo Airport, making Moscow Domodedovo Airport the more likely option.
Moscow Domodedovo Airport is already the Moscow home base of Star Alliance members Austrian, EgyptAir, Lufthansa, Singapore Airlines, Spanair, Swissair, TAP, Thai Airways and Turkish Airlines.
The planned reshuffling of airlines is driven by Aeroflot's demands on Sheremetyevo Airport, but is met by resistance by other airlines including also Russian carriers that have based their traffic systems and development plans on Moscow Sheremetyevo Airport.
