Oct 26, 2011 (newstodate): A conflict is looming between EU and Russia, China and USA over environmental charges to be imposed on aviation from January 1, 2012.
With effect from this date, all airlines flying in Europe will have to obtain quotas for greenhouse gas emissions in proportion to its volume of traffic.
Under the scheme, an airline will be allotted a quota of emissions estimated at 85 percent of baseline emissions in 2010 for free, while the remaining 15 percent will have to paid for.
Both USA, China and now also Russia have, however, rejected the demands by the EU Commission as they are not party to the decision.
