Oct 27, 2011 (newstodate): Plans for a fresh tender for privatization of Slovakia's Bratislava Milan Rastislav Stefanik Airport are again on the table.
The government is currently in the process of contracting an international consultant to design and manage the process that will take form of a tender for a 30-year concession to lease and manage the airport from 2012.
In 2010 the airport handled a total of 1.67 mio passengers, a far cry from the 2.2 mio passengers handled in 2008, when the airport was still the prime hub of SkyEurope, Seagle Air and Air Slovakia, all of which went brankrupt during the years of crisis.
The airport is currently amidst a project for construction of new passenger terminal.
The first stage of the complex went operational in June 2009, and the second and last part of project will be completed by June 2012, increasing the total handling capacity to five mio passengers annually.
On the cargo side, the airport Bratislava is constructing a new base facility for DHL, aimed at handling the company's shipments to Slovakia as well as to the Czech Republic, Austria and Hungary.
